Winter Penguin

Starting out:

*You will need: Paint Shop Pro 7.04 or higher.
*The zip file is here.

Open the Winter Penguin psp file provided.

Selections will be opened by going to Selections > Load From Alpha Channel

** 01 - Body

  • Highlight layer Body.
  • Load the Body selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #FFFFFF (White).


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Body Shade selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #808080
  • Apply Noise at 3%

** 02 - Head

  • Highlight layer Head.
  • Load the Head selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #000000 (Black).

** 03 - Right Shoe

  • Highlight layer Right Shoe.
  • Load the Right Shoe selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #000000 (Black).

** 04 - Left Shoe

  • Highlight layer Left Shoe.
  • Load the Left Shoe selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #000000 (Black).

** 05 - Shoe Highlights

  • Highlight layer Shoe Highlights.
  • Load the Shoe Highlights selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #FFFFFF (White).

** 06 - Jacket

  • Highlight layer Jacket.
  • Load the Jacket selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #960000.


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Jacket Dark selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #640000


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Jacket Light selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #C00000
  • Deselect.
  • Apply Noise at 3%

** 07 - Arms

  • Highlight layer Arms.
  • Load the Arms selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #960000.


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Arms Dark selection.
  • Flood fill *twice* with the color #640000
  • Apply Noise at 3%

** 08 - Head White

  • Highlight layer Head White.
  • Load the Head White selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #FFFFFF (White).


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Head Shade selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #C0C0C0

** 09 - Hat Back

  • Highlight layer Hat Back.
  • Load the Hat Back selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #960000.


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Hat Back Light selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #C00000


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Hat Back Dark selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #640000
  • Deselect.
  • Apply Noise at 6%

** 10 - Hat Front

  • Highlight layer Hat Front.
  • Load the Hat Front selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #960000.


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Hat Front Light selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #C00000


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Hat Front Dark selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #640000
  • Deselect.
  • Apply Noise at 6%

** 11 - Scarf 1

  • Highlight layer Scarf 1.
  • Load the Scarf 1 selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #2F4738.


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Scarf 1 Dark selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #1B2720
  • Deselect.
  • Apply Noise at 3%

** 12 - Scarf 2

  • Highlight layer Scarf 2.
  • Load the Scarf 2 selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #2F4738.


  • SAME LAYER -- Load Scarf 2 Dark selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #1B2720
  • Deselect.
  • Apply Noise at 3%

** 13 - Extra Shading

  • Highlight layer Extra Shading.
  • Load the Extra Shading selection.
  • Flood fill with the color #640000.
  • Deselect.

** Finishing Up...

Make all layers visible.

I have provided the face for you, but feel free to make your own.
Note: The face provided is *not* to be used for anything but this penguin.

** Additional ideas:

You can also use Brightness/Contrast for the jacket, arms, and hat shading.

I've found that +40 is good for the light shading and -60 to -80 is good for the dark shading.

Note: For the "Extra Shading" selection, flood fill with the darkest color in your jacket.
