Penguin

Starting out:

*You will need: Paint Shop Pro 6 or higher [written using psp 9]
*The zip file is here.

Open the Penguin file.

Selections will be opened by going to Selections > Load/Save Selection > Load Selection from Alpha Channel.

I've added a color chart to the image file. To select a color while using the Airbrush or Flood Fill tools, simply hold down the CTRL key and click on the color on the chart.

** 01 - Feet

  • Highlight layer Feet.
  • Load Selection #1.
  • Flood fill with the color #f3ab1f.


  • Switch to your Airbrush tool with these settings:
Airbrush Settings
[Ignore "thickness" and "rotation" if you're not using psp 8 or 9]

  • Lightly spray around the edges with the color #d79712.

** 02 - Back Wing Black

  • Highlight layer Back Wing Black.
  • Load Selection #2.
  • Flood fill with the color #575757.


  • Airbrush tool - change the Size to 55.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #2d2b2b.

** 03 - Back Wing White

  • Highlight layer Back Wing White.
  • Load Selection #3.
  • Flood fill with the color #ffffff.


  • Airbrush tool - Size 55.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #c0c0c0.

** 04 - Body White

  • Highlight layer Body White.
  • Load Selection #4.
  • Flood fill with the color #ffffff.


  • Airbrush tool - change the Size to 70.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #c0c0c0.

** 05 - Body Black

  • Highlight layer Body Black.
  • Load Selection #5.
  • Flood fill with the color #575757.


  • Airbrush tool - Size 70.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #2d2b2b.

We'll be coming back to the hearts and envelopes layers at the end. Skip them for now.

** 06 - Front Wing White

  • Highlight layer Front Wing White.
  • Load Selection #6.
  • Flood fill with the color #ffffff.


  • Airbrush tool - change the Size to 55.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #c0c0c0.

** 07 - Front Wing Black

  • Highlight layer Front Wing Black.
  • Load Selection #7.
  • Flood fill with the color #575757.


  • Airbrush tool - Size 55.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #2d2b2b.


    • **NOTE -- do not spray the area where the wing meets the body.

[This may take a few tries.]

** 08 - Head Black

  • Highlight layer Head Black.
  • Load Selection #8.
  • Flood fill with the color #575757.


  • Airbrush tool - Size 55.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #2d2b2b.

** 09 - Head White / Cheeks

  • Highlight layer Head White.
  • Load Selection #9.
  • Flood fill with the color #ffffff.


  • Airbrush tool - change the Size to 50.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #c0c0c0.


  • KEEP SELECTED
  • Highlight layer Cheeks.
  • Airbrush tool - change the Size to 45.
  • Click once on each side of his face with the color #f1afaf.
  • * Optional - I duplicated the Cheeks layer.

** 10 - Beak Light

  • Highlight layer Beak Light.
  • Load Selection #10.
  • Flood fill with the color #f3ab1f.


  • Airbrush tool - change the Size to 24.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #d79712.

** 11 - Beak Dark

  • Highlight layer Beak Dark.
  • Load Selection #11.
  • Flood fill with the color #d79712.


  • Airbrush tool - Size 24.
  • Lightly spray around the edges of the selection with the color #b8861c.

** 12 - Eyes

  • Highlight layer Eyes.
  • Load Selection #12.
  • Flood fill with the color #000000.


  • Selections > Select None
  • Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel with the Round preset.

The following steps are optional. The penguin can hold many different items. I've created mine holding hearts and letters. If you want them, continue on.





For better shading, we'll be doing these backwards.

** 13 - Envelope 2

  • Highlight layer Envelope 2.
  • Load Selection #16.
  • Flood fill with the color #f8d590.


  • Airbrush tool - change the Size to 45.
  • Lightly spray around the edges with the color #d4ab5c.

** 14 - Envelope 1

  • Highlight layer Envelope 1.
  • Load Selection #15.
  • Flood fill with the color #f8d590.


  • Airbrush tool - Size 45.
  • Lightly spray around the edges with the color #d4ab5c.

** 15 - Heart 2

  • Highlight layer Heart 2.
  • Load Selection #14.
  • Flood fill with the color #c00000.


  • Airbrush tool - change the Size to 55.
  • Lightly spray around the edges with the color #800000.

** 15 - Heart 1

  • Highlight layer Heart 1.
  • Load Selection #13.
  • Flood fill with the color #c00000.


  • Airbrush tool - Size 55.
  • Lightly spray around the edges with the color #800000.

** 16 - Envelope Text (Optional)

  • Highlight layer Envelope Text.
  • Add text. I added my text as a vector layer so I could rotate it a bit.

** Finishing Up . . .

When you're finished, highlight the Colors layer. Go to Layers > Delete.

The penguin can hold numerous items. Be sure to save it as a PSP file with layers intact so you can add other items later.
